The celebration

Well, we did it. So often we have said we were going to take an outing without a plan and see what we could find on the unbeaten trail. I had heard of a place on the Mississippi called Oquawka; there is a legend that goes with this little spot in the road and we went to check it out. The story goes that in 1972 an elephant named Norma Jean was struck by lightening in Oquawka, Illinois and buried on the spot. We went in search of this historic spot. Sure enough the grave is marked and everything. Being a Norma Jean myself, I had to have my photo made by the gravesite of my namesake. At the foot of Main street we were greeted by the mighty miss. - just like the Illinois river at the foot of Court St. in Pekin. If you keep driving you are in the river. Hans looked for eagles but didn't see any. Also on Main St. we spotted an historic marker and stopped to read. Alas our current president made a political speech in tiny Oquawka. Remember the adage " good things come in small packages"? The same goes for small towns. We had a great time in Oquawka. Tomorrow: Roseville, Illinois
